Purse size sets everything else
Pick a purse that makes your top player worth about 15% of it. For a 100-point purse, marquee players land between 12 and 20 points and the room stays interesting all the way to the last lot. Too large a purse and nothing feels expensive; too small and the auction ends in twenty minutes.
Retention
Retention lets a returning team keep one or two players from last season at a fixed cost deducted from the purse. It rewards loyalty and gives your league continuity — but cap it at two players, or new teams start at a real disadvantage.
Right to match
Right to match lets a former team match the winning bid for its old player. Use it only when you can explain it in one sentence on the mic, and only when your bid screen can show the matched amount clearly. Otherwise it slows the room.
Accelerated and unsold rounds
In the last hour, switch to an accelerated round: teams nominate the remaining players they want on the block. Follow it with one unsold re-entry round at base price so every squad reaches the legal minimum.
- Announce squad minimums and maximums at the start
- Cap retentions at two players per team
- Always finish with an unsold re-entry round
